Take a look at these lyrics from Katy Perry’s lovely song, Firework…
Do you ever feel like a plastic bag,
drifting through the wind
wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
like a house of cards,
one blow from caving in?
Do you ever feel already buried deep?
6 feet under screams but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there’s still a chance for you
‘Cause there’s a spark in you
Bridge:
You just gotta ignite, the light, and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July
Chorus:
‘Cause baby you’re a firework
Come on, show ’em what you’re worth
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y
Baby, you’re a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh”
You’re gonna leave ’em all in awe, awe, awe
You don’t have to feel like a waste of space
You’re original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow
Maybe you’re reason why all the doors are closed
So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road
Like a lightning bolt, your heart will GLOW
And when it’s time, you’ll know
Bridge & Chorus
Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It’s always been inside of you, you, you
And now it’s time to let it through-ough-ough
‘Cause baby you’re a firework
Come on, show ’em what you’re worth
Make ’em go “Oh, Oh, Oh”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y
Baby, you’re a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make ’em go “Oh, Oh, Oh”
You’re gonna leave ’em all in awe, awe, awe

I absolutely love this song because it’s one of the few tunes out today that can apply to anyone. It’s not drenched in provocative innuendoes, profane language or negativity and it’s far from cliché pop. To the contrary, this song is positive! It homes in on how negative feelings can suppress people but it encourages listeners to go against those feelings of being trapped and become free.
Let me draw you a little closer to the bridge:
“You just gotta ignite, the light, and let it shine…”
This is what always catches my attention and as a Christian, I sing this particular part a tad bit louder than the rest of the song! For me, the “light” mentioned here is my faith which when put in action, shines and helps me to overcome complexes, doubts, fears, seemingly impossible situations and more. Here, I celebrate the faith that God has ignited in me, a faith that everyone has and when ignited works wonders and causes an explosion.
So that’s all well and good for me but what about those people who have no clue how to ignite this light? They’re not going to ignite it in a club, or by getting lost in alcohol or drugs, or any other temporary fix. Everyone wants to be a firework but not everyone knows how…
This is why I love the UCKG’s 24-hr Helpline. It’s in my opinion one of the few places that you can call at anytime of the day and open up without be judged or labeled. You are free to pour out what’s been suppressing you and in the end you can find that energy to ‘ignite this light’ that ‘s mentioned in the above lyrics with a little help from someone who cares.
Whether it’s referral to an organisation that can help a person with housing, financial and debt advice, or a word of encouragement to boost a caller’s confidence and to point them in the right direction, the 24-hr National Helpline can serve as this ignition.
If you or someone you know wants “to shoot across the sky” and make things happen in life but feels a little lost or stuck then why not refer them to the UCKG’s 24-hr Helpline on 0870 0682 000.
As universal as this song is, so is this service to all people, coming from a charity that works hard to help people make a new beginning.
